Your Dying Spouse 703 - Thankful {FMF}

A lot of people may not think it much, but I'm thankful for what I've got.

Either I'm a super-advanced soul, or doing the Cleopatra-Queen-of-De-Nile thing.

Just call me Cleo, but it's fun, rocking the cancer gig.

I'm thankful for the danger
that stalks me every day;
death's a proud cold stranger
but I'm keeping him at bay.
I'm thankful for malignancy
that's tearing me apart,
for it highlights the exigency
of softening my heart.
I'm thankful for the nausea,
and thankful for the pain.
In both I find fair grazia,
and motivation to remain.
The day will come when death betide,
and I'll rise upon a thankful tide.

And, of course, here are The Bangles with Walk Like An Egyptian.

Your Dying Spouse 702 - How Far We've Come

It can be interesting, to look back and see how far you've come.

The sonnet below was written several months ago, and so many really bad things have happened in my body since thenn, that it seems like gratuitous chest-beating.

I'm four years past my sell-by date,
and Doc's surprised, how long I've lasted,
but there's a simple way I cheated fate:
I am a tough hard ornery bastard.
Today new tumour in the mirror,
and a joke my wife thought sick;
but, you see, there's nothing clearer
than this road-fork: take your pick:
sentiment can be the heart's kind guide,
and you'll live a Hallmark movie,
or you can laugh with Spartan pride
where even death is somethin' groovy.
If it's further days you seek,
shun the feelings of the weak.

Today I have neither time nor energy to think and write this way.

I just give death the finger, and move on. Way more economical, and less embarrassing.

Music from Matchbox 20, with How Far We've Come.

Your Dying Spouse 701 - Can't Touch This

Really too sick to write a full post but I hope you'll enjoy this.

It's a faith and it's a ministry;
it's a job and it's a calling.
It's defeat containing victory,
and I soar as I am falling.
I'd truly like to write the man
that I would wish that you might see,
but God has quite another plan
and He demands veracity.
Thus, I write a truth so mortal
that sometimes I scarce can stand,
but it provides, I hope, a portal
and a willing helping hand.
Perhaps I'm further down this road,
and perhaps my words may ease your load.

Mucis from MC Hammer, with U Can't Touch This.

Your Dying Spouse 700 - The Grace Of Rain {FMF}

This week has been rough.

Bad things get worse (the golf-ball-size lump in my navel is now the size of a billiard ball...and it hurts).

New things get bad (the 'necklace' of swollen lymph nodes around my neck is speading)

Old things get scary (is it possible to live without sleep?..'cause the oh-crap-I-can't-breathe-thing is getting BO-RING!).

Some things just get weird (I tried to give myself a haircut).

And today, it rained.

Now this morning comes the rain,
and it is raining hard.
Wrapped in cold I find, there, pain,
and puddles in the yard.
My sandals leave a muddy trail
(no boots, they clog and slide);
dogs look own with lowered tails,
and find dry space to hide.
But I know this too shall pass,
and sunlight brings the grace;
reflected from each blade of grass,
I see God's smiling face.
And come tomorrow's sunny morn,
the world is clean-washed, and reborn.

Music from Christopher Cross, with Ride Like The Wind.

Your Dying Spouse 699 - Living Water

Life is hard, but God is there.

We can't know His ways; we just have to trust.

We have to keep our faith alive, no matter what. And to be grateful for what is yet ours.

I'd say more, but I'm too ill today, and ask your prayers.

Our Lord is living water
and our thirst is for His slaking,
but we’re lambs unto the slaughter,
and our hearts are for the breaking.
We cannot see His meanings,
we cannot know His ends,
but our meagre bloody gleanings
are the bodies of our friends.
Someday, perhaps, we’ll understand,
or perhaps we never will,
why some where destined for the grand
and others for the kill.
Meanwhile, pilgrim, bow your head.
you still have time, and are not dead.

Music from John Denver, with Rocky Mountain High. Well, why not?
