We have cows. Not our own, mind; our home is on the open range, and cows regularly drift through to munch on the sage, and on the desert willow that Barb is trying to keep alive.
They play with the dogs, and will sometimes peer in through the windows.
And last winter, I slipped on a patch of ice, and couldn't get up. A cow ambled over to offer a horn, and pulled me to my feet.
I like cows.
I wandered, lonely as a cow
far from the madding herd,
banished, for I would not bow
to that which they preferred.
They got themselves in such a state
when I forswore my cud,
and chose, instead to liberate
the rancher's case of Bud.
What followed, to them, was more crass
in what was now evoked,
my saying, 'staid of eating grass
that it should perforce be smoked,
but my case was truly torn
by my tooting my own horn.
The Five Minute Friday prompt this week is HIDE. Ok.
Cancer came and done for me,
there ain't no place to hide,
and it is no mystery
that it's kicking my backside.
The metastasis that's in my leg's
now clear unto the eye,
and it's tempting, yeah, to wail and beg,
"Lord, please don't let me die!"
But death has got to come to all,
and that's the Gospel truth.
Maybe Eve done tripped the Fall,
but that ain't no excuse
for whinin' like a hungry pup
when it's time to cowboy up.
Five minutes flat. Yee-ha.
For music, here's 'Deep In The Heart Of Texas'. Yeah, I'm in New Mexico. Close enough.
Sylvia appreciates cows, for they are the source of ice cream.
I like cows too, though it is sheep we have in our field! Sending love & prayers. xx
ReplyDeleteLove and prayers back, Fiona!
DeleteIsn't it just like God to send exactly what you needed to get you back up on your feet! I am always grateful to see you here on Fridays. Praying for you.
ReplyDeleteJoanne, yes... God's angels sometimes go MOO!
DeleteThank you so much for your prayers!
Yee-ha, Cowboy. I laughed when I saw this post was about cows!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you enjoyed the cows, Tish!
Delete((((Andrew))))
ReplyDeleteI love it!

DeleteThe cows say Thank You!
Please read my post
ReplyDeleteCows are so interesting! Glad there was one that helped you up after slipping on ice. Ha! May you have a grace-filled week, Andrew.
ReplyDeleteLisa, you're so right. Cows are fascinating, sociable, and smart.
DeleteGod's with me, supplying grace.
Andrew, great posts. I've slipped and fallen and even landed in what the cow left behind and they didn't hang around to help me up. Keep riding, cowboy.
ReplyDeleteOh, Duane! I've fallen in cow gifts, to, and was once thrown from a horse into a fresh example. Yee ha!
DeleteLove the image of a cow offering you a horn to pull you up.
ReplyDeleteGrams, the help from the cow was so unexpected. And since then, if I tire when walking the dogs, I can lean on an obliging bovine, until I have my breath back. Somehow, they understand.
DeleteI love that the cow helped you up! Great photos of Sylvia too!
ReplyDeleteLesley, the cow's help was wonderful. And so glad you like Sylvia!
DeleteCow's are my favorite. Great message Andrew. Blessings.

I really love cows too, Paula. Blessings back!
DeleteHe hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock
ReplyDeleteThat shadows a dry, thirsty land
He hideth my life in the depths of his love
And covers me there with his hand.
Such a little blessing for God to send a cow to help you up but one that was so needed at the moment.
Rhonda, the Scripture is perfect...and God's sending a cow to help was just right for me, someone who's worked with critters all my life.
DeleteThere are cows in the fields across our road, and sheep in our own pastures. I don't trust any of them to help me up, but I like your experience.
ReplyDeleteTeresa, I would not have thought of a cow helping me up.
DeleteUntil it happened.
You always bring us such fresh perspectives to all of life, and now that includes cows! Thank you always for your words, my friend. Sending love!
ReplyDeleteKaren, I am so happy to share my bovine friends.
DeleteLove back!
what a fun story about the cow offering you a "horn up"! I like cows too. Love and prayers for you and Barb this weekend
ReplyDeleteKym, that cow giving my a 'horn up' was the start of a new appreciation for what God wrought in His Creation.
DeleteLove back, and thank you so much for the prayers!
This is a lovely post!
ReplyDeleteJan, thank you for the affirmation, and for being here.
DeleteThank you so much, Rajani.
ReplyDeleteGlad you're still writing and still have your sense of humor.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy reading them, though, I have to say, your suffering makes me sad. You don't let it defeat you. We can all learn from that.
Take care, Andrew.
My dear Norma... it's bad now, each day worse than the previous, but I find, increasingly, that joy is a choice.
