Your Dying Spouse 599 - DONKEY! {FMF}

OK, I have Barb's permission for this one. Otherwise, I'm a lot sooner a dead man than otherwise.

The other day she found a strand of hair in her bangs that was rather longer than the rest, and asked me to cut it.

She's brave.

Anyway, she stretched it out, I cut it, and when the tension on the hair was thus released, down came her hand on my rather sensitive upper-abdomen, which nearly dropped me to my knees.

"Damn!" she said, mortified. "I feel like such an ass!"

And with my reply, she has thus entered the Shrek pantheon.

No lasting harm was done, and the laugh we got out of the new nickname put paid to her beating herself up over self-perceived 'carelessness'. It's just life; things happen.

Wherever life takes you, you're always being measured for a nickname, and measure is the Five Minute Friday Prompt this week.

And she trusted me to trim her hair!

I really don't like being fragile;
touch me wrong and I might die.
Far better to be strong and agile,
leap the chasm, grab the sky!
But delicate's my lot today
and maybe not all bad
because in weakness comes the way
to depend on Jesus' Dad.
I have to say it breeds compassion
for those far worse off than me
and, after some transcendental fashion
makes me care for an enemy.
As painful as this race has run,
I'd wish it not on anyone.

So let's be Livin' La Vida Loca with Donkey and Puss, from Shrek 2.

Your Dying Spouse 598 - The Grace He Brings

I suppose it's inevitable, that you finally come to a place where your strength can't carry you any more, where all of the motivational tricks fall flat, and where even will becomes a very slender reed.

And that is where you find youself standing on bedrock.

There is no place of refuge,
there is nowhere to run;
no shelter from the deluge,
no shade against the sun.
You cannot call for mercy
from demons' ripping claws
and when strength deserts thee
there shall be no pause.
The days are never-ending,
the nights are longer still,
no point in now pretending
that former steadfast will.
Here at the end of things
hearts open for the Grace He brings.

Music from Manafest, with Every Time You Run.

Your Dying Spouse 597 - He Is With You

The worse things get, the more I know...

...I am not alone.

Turn, and face the music.
Turn, and face your fear.
You sense with ev'ry clock-tick
that death is drawing near.
You dread the loss of morning
and the lease-hold of the night
and the unbidden though a-borning
that you will lose this fight.
The road you walk is lonely
but you are not alone
and the chill you feel is only
the ague of flesh and bone.
Your heart was meant for more than this,
salvation bought through Judas' kiss.

Music from Mandisa; He Is With You.

Your Dying Spouse 596 - The Reward {FMF}

The pain you bear,
the fear you hold,
the falling tear
from an eye yet bold
will keep you true
to these dying dreams
and see you through
this vale of screams.
I know it well,
this place I roam;
you may call it hell
but I call it home.
Impaled by cancer's flaming sword
this deadly fight's its own reward.

Nothing Is Over.

Your Dying Spouse 595 - The First Day Of Spring

It was almost like the old days;
it was almost like a song,
before my life went sideways
and everything went wrong.
It started before sunrise,
dawn greeted by the birds,
telling of the day's surprise
in a chorus without words.
My buried hope arising,
expectation near awake
and a spirit, enterprising
to repair a lost heartache.
It's been years since I felt a lift
like this morning's spirit-gift.

Music from Barry Manilow, with Daybreak.
